In an Exclusive Interview with The Pretty, Cranky Talks About Her Decision to Quit Recapping

The Pretty: I’m here today … well, actually, since last night … and morning … and into the afternoon … With the Cranky Recapper … Thanks for being here, Cranky.

Cranky: Oh, it’s my pleasure, The Pretty … Believe me … Pleasure … Really …

The Pretty: Cranky, word on the road is that you’re thinking of giving up recapping.

Cranky: On the street … and yes, I’m afraid that’s true.

The Pretty: But no … say it ain’t so … Who’s going to chronicle my time in the Hair Salon?

Cranky: Well, maybe you and Abby are just going to have to expand your repertoire to include playing Stenographer and her Dictation Machine … Bitch …

The Pretty: But … but … what about tracking my moods through my shirt colors?

Cranky: … And include Fortune Teller and Her Crystal Ball … Bitch …

The Pretty: Or encourage me to corral my High Horse of Moral Superiority?

Cranky: … And Cowgirl and Her Saddle … Bitch …

The Pretty: This is very upsetting … Why, Cranky? … Why?

Cranky: There are a number of reasons, The Pretty. One is that lately it has become increasingly more difficult to do, to the point where it’s more like a job than an extracurricular activity.

The Pretty: … Extracurricular activities … I have quite a few of those of my own … and they usually involve lathering, rinsing, and repeating …Hmmmmm …

Cranky: Bitch ….

The Pretty: Oh, yeah … where was I? … Um, any other reason?

Cranky: Well, The Pretty, I originally got into this recapping thing on a lark. A friend of mine in England was lamenting the pending lack of recaps for ER at the end of Season 11, because they’re months behind the US for new episodes. Since my least favorite character was finally leaving and I thought it would infuse the show with more energy, which it did, I thought it might be fun to write about, so I told her that I would recap for her so she’d know what was going on. She suggested doing it as a blog. So that summer I just started out typical blogging to get used to writing, then wrote a recap of an old Afterschool Special with everyone’s favorite ex-Blind Prairie Bitch, Melissa Sue Anderson, for another friend, and then dove into ER’s twelfth season …

The Pretty: … and The Hair Salon …

Cranky: Well, it really does all come back to the hair.

The Pretty: But why stop now?

Cranky: Lately outside stuff … you know, like everyday life type of things and all that … has been infringing on recapping time, so much so that after tonight, I will be four eps behind - well, three and a half, really, since I have been working on one – and while I was hoping to get caught up by February Sweeps, if today is any indication, with it’s steady stream of time-consuming interruptions and distractions every time I sit down to write, that seems unlikely.

The Pretty: You have been lagging behind on the recaps …

Cranky: Yeah … I started out the season on track with the recaps, then it seemed like things began to conspire against my finishing them in a timely fashion – from computer issues to unrelenting greatly annoying health problems - it just seems that maybe somebody is trying to tell me something.

The Pretty: And you think that something is that you should give it up?

Cranky: That and I, unfortunately and regrettably, am also the type of person who does not respond well to nagging - so a constant barrage of emails asking when the next recap is going to be posted makes me even less inclined to keep plugging away at them, and more inclined to just sit back and enjoy The Pretty … I mean, “the show” … without the worry of having to think of something to say about it, and the great amount of time spent actually saying it.

The Pretty: I guess I can understand your just wanting to admire the view … You mentioned health problems … Didn’t my prescription and private personal attentions cure that?

Cranky: Well, unfortunately, that was a temporary fix, and then you went back to playing Hide The Antlers with the Skanky Elf … Bitch … and without my treatments, I’m afraid the condition has worsened.

The Pretty: Oh … well, we’ll just have to do something about that won’t we?

Cranky: What did you have in mind, Doctor?

The Pretty: Well, first, you have to promise to not quit recapping altogether.

Cranky: … I don’t know …

The Pretty: Look, if I promise that you’ll not be bugged about updates and can work on the recaps when you are able, will you consider continuing?

Cranky: … Well …

The Pretty: And if I make sure The Dwarf has to pull a lot of double shifts so that you’ll have my undivided attention for some rejuvenating deep intensive moisturizing salon treatments and full body massages, would you reconsider?

Cranky: Hmmm … if you put it that way … When would we start?

The Pretty: This concludes our interview with the Cranky Recapper.

Editorial Note: Cranky will be continuing to provide her recapping services … but only after she has been fully serviced herself …

Cranky!

You've done such an outstanding service to your loyal fans, I hope you will continue but only if you have fun with it. I can be very patient b/c the reward is loads of laughter. Maybe take your e-mail address off the blog site so it's not so easy to nag you. Your time investment is not taken for granted by most of us, especially those of us with children. Stay lighthearted and enjoy tonight's episode and the rest of the season. You deserve to watch it without any pressure - only with pleasure.

Dear Cranky,

Your work is outstanding. Take your time and enjoy your writing. When it becomes forced, you will not enjoy it and it becomes a pain in the arse rather than a pleasure. I don't care if you fall a season behind. Your updates are timeless to whomever enjoys the show and it will tickle us no matter when we read them. Heck, I still laugh hysterically at the recaps from the beginning of the season.
Take care,
Jessica

Hi Cranky,
Sometimes people doesn´t understand that this kind of work, requires time and dedication, and that that time and dedication is usualy took from family, work, friends, personal care, etc...
I hope you can go on, beacuse I (like a lot of people) enjoy a lot your recaps, but, healt and family are allways first, so if you decide to stop recaping I can only say that I will miss you and that I hope that one day I will have an other oportunity to read you, beacuse is not only my ER addiction what ussualy brings my here, is also your talent as a writer (you should dedicate to this, writing).
Thanks for everything.

Cranky, u have such talent, often I wish ER will sack their writers and hire u instead! although they get paid millions for what they do, and u do it only for pleasure, which is obv not being v pleasurable at the mo. I hope after some time off you will return with whatever you wish to write...ER obsessive I am, but I love to read ur witty antedotes in whichever form u wish
Take care and enjoy ER and the Pretty!

Promise I won't bug, nag or beg Cranky for an update ... after all everyone' day got only 24hours.
It will always be an amazing pleasure to (re)read you.

Cranky, you are loved by so many ER fans including myself. You should just know that it doesn't matter how long it takes you to do a recap. We would like you to stay in our ER lives. Your life comes first and recapping should come second. I mean you have A LOT of time to write before the season is over and before the next season starts. You shouldn't feel obligated to have a recap up before the next episode. We're just grateful to have your recaps. Take all the time you need. You should know that ER fans are acustomed to waiting long periods for new episodes so we can wait long enough for anything. ;)

Your recaps are always wonderful to read; I hope you'll be able to continue (hey, you get 3 weeks to catch up now... only joking).

And people: stop nagging her! Recaps aren't as easy as you think!

Hi Cranky,

I agree with so much of what has been written above. I regularly check your blog, and what a delight it is when I find something new to keep me amused, but there should be no great expectation or obligation - given that this is purely a hobby for you. As others have said, take as long as you wish, the most important thing is that you get as much fun doing them as the rest of us get from reading them.

Take care, we luv ya!

Well firstly, can we take a moment and thank the pretty for taking time out from his hectic job as shampoo boy to provide us with this exclusive interview.

Now, I move on to Cranky. May I just say I have been reading your recaps for quite sometime now, and as far as I remember, I've never commented on them. Shame on me.
Your recaps are simply incredible Cranky m'dear.
They make television without pity look like childrens stories.
I honestly don't care when you post up your latest addition, because I know that when it arrives it will be full of fun and laughs and 'bitch'ing and shampooing to the max. And the longer it takes, the better I know it's gonna be.
Sure, I could sit here and request over and over that you post up the next 4 or so recaps before the next episode airs. But what would be the point in that? Sure, you'd probably make them as funny as you can, but they'd be the same as any other recap out there. It's knowing the amount of time it takes you to write them that makes them even more special and more importantly, makes us appreiciate you even more.

Take care Cranky.

(Oh my, that comment was long wasn't it? Guess that's what I get for not commenting in over a year. I could type for England about your recaps...and now I'm just making the comment even longer, so I'm gonna stop, honestly...)

Thank you!! (Now I'm going...really)

... and your little extra treats of letters, doctor notes and santa lists, are absoutely hilarious! I love those as much as the recaps.

No nagging.

I will be happy to find a recap once a while, when you feel like doing it.

Cranky, I understand you... I was afraid this day would come at last.
I want to tell you that I will wait for you for ever, no matters how many time that means.
There's no other way for me to know what's going on on ER bc I live abroad and I don't have TV cable, nor broad-band.
I have enjoyed your recaps as you can't imagine.

Cranky,
Must say that I miss you already very, very much!
I'll swing by from time to time and if there's something new it'll always be a tremendous pleasure!
Am sure your kiddos and hubby will be happy to have you back just for them and pamper you (in the hair salon?)...
For now concentrate on getting rid of those nasty germs and enjoy the season!

Cheers for all your outstanding work!

I have an idea!! What if you only recap Luka's and Abby's scenes? Or if you make less less lesss detailed recaps?

OK, take all the time you need. I agree with what you said about that you have to enjoy doing this and I also agree with the 1st post suggesting taking your e-mail address off the blog.

You have PLENTY of time 'till S14 starts and apparently this is Goran's last season!!!
NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Cranky - Life is too short to be miserable. I have greatly enjoyed your recaps, but you obviously put a great deal of time and effort into them. Take care of what is important - your health and family. Come back if you wish, but only if it is what you want to do. All the best. Good heath to you in 2007. -Kitty

Dear Cranky!

I just discovered this blog about a month ago when I was looking for recaps for the show, and I have read every single entry by now.
I love it and you are fabulous!
I'm Icelandic and here in Iceland we are not just a month behind, we are a whole *beep* season behind! The episode where Plank/Deadwood dies was just aired here three days ago. And since I'm a huge Neela and Ray (well and Morris) fan I was looking for hopeful spoilers about Neela and Ray, what I found was your site - and it's soooooo much better!
So thanks for all the laughter the past month! I hope the new year will bring you better health.

Dear Cranky,
I'm going to miss you terribly, but I completely understand. I'm the same way on the nagging issue (childhood trauma, don't ask.) I just found you a few months ago and hadn't read your earlier posts until now. (Kind of like reading a great book then going back and reading the authors first book.) "House of Mouse" is a work of art. Please, Please, Please leave the site up so we can still enjoy all your prior posts. Have fun with your recovery.

Oh Cranky...you scared me! I hope you will use the hiatus time to get fully serviced from head to toe so that you can come back refreshed and ready to provide your eager public with all kinds of juicy tidbits from the Salon.

Cranky,
I have FULL appreciation for what you do as I have been recapping ER epis for a friend's site myself. Mine aren't nearly as funny...or fun. And I am with other posters here...just enjoy your life and your kiddos....and The Pretty. And thank you! I am amazed at how the language/nicknames you have invented have slipped into an occasional post elsewhere, my text/cell phone conversations and even in my classroom.....Heh.... had to tell a little boy to quit playing 'shampoo boy' the other day because he was messing with a little girls's hair! Hugs and kisses, friend!

At 5:35 PM, January 13, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You had me really worried there! I'm glad you will continue recapping on your own schedule. I don't care how late they are. Not only am I in England...I don't pay the tv license...so it would be pretty hard for you to get further behind me as far as tv is concerned!

Take your time getting those recaps up. We can all be patient.

And enjoy that treatment with The Pretty.

Dear Cranky,

I did not send you emails demaiding an update. That wasn't me. The person you saw standing outside of your house, spying on your family. That wasn't me either. And it certainly wasn't me who sent you all assortment of squeaky frogs with a note says “I thought you might be missing these”.

Sincerely,
Bird

(Please take as much time as you need and take care!)

This is just a plot to get Luka to give you some individual salon time, isn't it?

I hope it works. Anyone so talented should be getting her own share of styling and treatments.

Dear Cranky,

Now look here! This hair salon is not big enough for the three of us. Please do not distract The Pretty from his duties of which i have exclusive rights for all time (or until a certain paramore returns, whichever comes first).

sincerely,

Now that Weaver's gone I won't be watching the show anymore, but I want to thank you for your excellent work in recaping the episodes. I really enjoyed reading them. I hope you haven't lost passion for writing, you have an amazing gift don't let others discourage you. I wish you the best. Sincerely, Trish
